The route, beginning on Dee Street in Belfast and finishing on the Belfast Road, Comber (September 2008), provides a ideal and safe environment for the leisure activities of walking and cycling. This provides an much needed health benefit, not only in the nationwide fight against obesity, but also in the decrease in stress in can facilitate.

The Greenway also provides a direct link to Belfast for cyclist commuters from Comber. The link can also be used for access to shops, the Arches Health Centre or Library. The Dee Street end provides a mainly traffic free route to the Odyssey Complex, and in the future to the Titanic Quarter.

The Greenway is sometimes referred to as the Natureway for a reason: it provides a habitat for large numbers of plants and animals. Indeed, it is for the rural escape from the urban bustle of Belfast that many people travel the Greenway.
